Facts & Statistics about Tellico Lake

Location: Tellico Lake is located in East Tennessee, primarily within Monroe County and Loudon County. It is situated southwest of Knoxville.
Formation: Tellico Lake is a reservoir created by the Tellico Dam on the Little Tennessee River. It was impounded in 1979.
Purpose: The Tellico Project (which created the lake and dam) was authorized by Congress for purposes of navigation, flood control, and recreation. However, the primary economic justification evolved to be recreation and residential development rather than navigation.
Area: Tellico Lake covers approximately 15,760 acres (around 24.6 square miles).
Shoreline: The lake has a shoreline of approximately 357 miles. This extensive shoreline is a key feature for lakeside development and recreation.
Depth: The average depth of Tellico Lake is around 35 feet. The maximum depth near the dam is significantly deeper.
Water Source: The primary water source is the Little Tennessee River. The lake also receives water from tributary creeks and streams.
TVA Management: Tellico Lake and Tellico Dam are managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).Dam Dimensions (Tellico Dam):
Type: Earth and rockfill embankment dam with a concrete spillway.
     Height: Approximately 129 feet high.
     Length: Approximately 3,900 feet long.
Power Generation: Unlike many TVA dams, Tellico Dam does not generate electricity. It was not built with hydroelectric power generation as a primary purpose.
Navigation: Tellico Lake was designed to improve navigation on the Little Tennessee River and connect it to the Tennessee River waterway system. The Tellico Canal connects Tellico Lake to Fort Loudoun Lake on the Tennessee River.
Flood Control: Tellico Dam and Lake play a role in flood control within the Tennessee River system by regulating water flow.
Recreation: Tellico Lake is a major recreational destination, offering:
Boating: Popular for powerboating, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Several marinas and boat      ramps are available.
Fishing: Known for bass, crappie, catfish, and other game fish. Fishing tournaments are common.
Swimming: Designated swimming areas and lake access points.
Parks & Recreation Areas: Surrounded by public parks, campgrounds, picnic areas, and trails managed by TVA,      state parks, and local entities. Examples include Tellico Lake Recreation Area, Fort Loudoun State Historic Park.
Golfing: Several golf courses are located near the lake, often associated with residential communities.
Residential Development: Tellico Lake has spurred significant residential development along its shoreline, particularly the Tellico Village retirement community, which is a large and well-known feature of the area.
Economic Impact: Tellico Lake and its associated recreation and residential development have had a substantial economic impact on Monroe and Loudon Counties, generating revenue through tourism, property taxes, and related businesses.
Controversy & Snail Darter: The Tellico Project was highly controversial during its construction, primarily due to environmental concerns, particularly the potential extinction of the Snail Darter, a small endangered fish species found only in the Little Tennessee River. This controversy brought significant national attention and legal challenges to the project in the 1970s.
Relocation of Towns & Farms: The creation of Tellico Lake resulted in the inundation of fertile farmland and the relocation of several small communities and historical sites in the Little Tennessee River Valley. This displacement was another source of controversy and local impact.
Fort Loudoun State Historic Park (Adjacent to Lake): Fort Loudoun, a significant 18th-century British fort, is located on the shores of Tellico Lake and is a major historical attraction tied to the lake area.
Water Quality: TVA monitors water quality in Tellico Lake. Generally considered to have good water quality suitable for recreation, although like any reservoir, it can be subject to issues like siltation and nutrient runoff.
Aquatic Life: Tellico Lake supports a diverse range of aquatic life beyond game fish, including various fish species, turtles, waterfowl, and other wildlife associated with lake ecosystems.
Elevation: Tellico Lake's surface elevation is typically maintained around 813 feet above sea level.
Accessibility: Tellico Lake is easily accessible by car via state and county roads, and is within reasonable driving distance from major cities like Knoxville and Chattanooga.
